When Dream and Day Unite (1989)
When Dream and Day Unite (1989) is the first studio album released by progressive metal band Dream Theater, on March 6, 1989. This is the only Dream Theater album not to feature a song over 10 minutes in length.

History
The album was recorded in the summer of 1988 at Kajem/Victory Studios in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, and is the only Dream Theater album to feature Charlie Dominici on vocals.
On March 12, 2002, a 32-bit remaster of the album was released.
On the 15th anniversary of the album, the current line-up of Dream Theater performed the album in its entirety in Los Angeles, California, and during two additional songs in the encore special guests Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian (both now former Dream Theater members) performed. The entire performance was recorded live and later released on CD and DVD under the title When Dream and Day Reunite through the band's independent label YtseJam Records. The album also featured a live version of "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper", which was originally from the album Images and Words, and an unreleased track titled "To Live Forever".

Images and Words (1992) Images and Words is the second album by progressive metal band Dream Theater.

History
It is the first album on which Dream Theater's current singer, James LaBrie, appears, and is considered a seminal release in the progressive metal genre[citation needed].
"Pull Me Under" received substantial airplay on radio stations and MTV, and to this day, arguably, remains the band's greatest hit. The album itself is also the most commercially successful of all Dream Theater's albums, attaining gold record certification in the U.S. and platinum in Japan.[1]
Images and Words was played in its entirety, on several occasions, during the European leg of the "Chaos In Motion" tour, in celebration of its 15th anniversary[2].

Awake (1994)
Awake is the third studio album from progressive metal band Dream Theater.

History
Released in 1994, this album is much darker and heavier than the band's previous full-lengths, and is the last album to feature keyboardist Kevin Moore.[1] Often criticized for its heavier sound by fans who were drawn to the band by Images and Words, it nonetheless is a fan favorite with several of the songs remaining concert staples to this day. In addition, many consider it to be the band's finest hour, citing more concise and mature songwriting mixed with the increasingly proficient technical abilities of the instrumentalists. When the band was finishing the recording of the album, Kevin Moore announced his leaving of Dream Theater, which, according to John Petrucci, was unexpected.[2] Moore was thus excluded from the rest of the album-making process (such as mixing),[3] and doesn't appear in the two music videos produced from the album.
The band has never performed the final song "Space-Dye Vest" live; Mike Portnoy has said on the matter that the band is not willing to do it without Kevin Moore, insisting that "it's his song", and furthermore that they would not have included the song on the album had they known that Moore had wanted to leave the band.[4]

Songs
Tracks 4-6 form a three-part suite titled A Mind Beside Itself. They are labeled as such inside the CD booklet; however, the back of the album cover lists them individually, with no mention of the phrase "A Mind Beside Itself." Each song is a separate index on the CD, and Dream Theater often treats them as individual songs at live concerts. They have, however, performed the suite 117 times live as of Osaka, Japan in 2004. They were released on the live album Live Scenes from New York and are listed under the title "A Mind Beside Itself parts I, II and III" there.
Similarly, "The Mirror" and "Lie" can be said to be parts of a single song broken in half. They flow coherently into each other and have a very similar mood with the interlude in "The Mirror" repeating in an altered state as a solo section in "Lie". Despite each part being written by a different member, they share similar themes of betrayal, trust and loss of control.
The samples in "6:00" are taken from the John Huston film The Dead.
The samples in "Space Dye Vest" are from the 1986 film, A Room with a View, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and from a news report following the O.J. Simpson freeway chase.

Track listing

Falling into Infinity (1997)
is the fourth full-length studio album by progressive metal band Dream Theater, released in 1997.

History
Falling into Infinity is the second and last studio release on which keyboardist Derek Sherinian appears. Due to graphic artist Storm Thorgerson's insistence on not working with other people's fonts, this became the second of the four Dream Theater releases (after their debut, When Dream and Day Unite and following live album and video/DVD, Once in a LIVEtime and 5 Years in a Livetime, which both were also done by Thorgerson) to not contain the classic Dream Theater font in the title. However, on all the releases the traditional Dream Theater "Majesty"[1] / "Mary, Queen of Scots" icon appears in some form. This was also the last album in which the band worked with a typical record producer - between changeovers at their record company Atlantic which left them with few "die hard" supporters and two years "down time" between the end of the tour for their last major release and beginning of the recording of Falling into Infinity, Atlantic's desire for the band to produce a more "radio/MTV-friendly" sound, and some conflicts with producer Kevin Shirley over those issues, the band has since "self-produced" their following albums by members Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci.

Track listing
1. "New Millennium" – 8:20 (music by Dream Theater, lyrics by Portnoy)
2. "You Not Me" – 4:58 (Dream Theater, Petrucci/Child)
3. "Peruvian Skies" – 6:43 (Dream Theater, Petrucci)
4. "Hollow Years" – 5:53 (Dream Theater, Petrucci)
5. "Burning My Soul" – 5:29 (Dream Theater, Portnoy)
6. "Hell's Kitchen" – 4:16 (Dream Theater, instrumental)
7. "Lines in the Sand" – 12:05 (Dream Theater, Petrucci)
8. "Take Away My Pain" – 6:03 (Dream Theater, Petrucci)
9. "Just Let Me Breathe" – 5:28 (Dream Theater, Portnoy)
10. "Anna Lee" – 5:51 (Dream Theater, LaBrie)
11. "Trial of Tears" – 13:07 (Dream Theater, Myung)
1. "It's Raining"
2. "Deep in Heaven"
3. "The Wasteland"

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999)
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, released in 1999, is Dream Theater's fifth studio album. It is a concept album that deals with the story of Nicholas and the discovery of his past life, which involves love, murder, and infidelity as Victoria Page. It is regarded among many critics as being one of the best progressive albums of all time.
The album was ranked number 95 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time [1].

History
As its name implies, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory is a sequel; it follows "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper", a song from the band's second album, Images and Words. However, when naming Metropolis Pt. 1, the band's intention was not to write a two part epic - it was intended as a joke. Only after continuous pleas from fans did the band begin working on "Part 2". Initially, the band started work on Part 2 as one song rather than a whole album. It was during the Falling Into Infinity sessions in 1996/97, the group's fourth album, that Part 2 began to take shape. The song was never polished up however, largely due to the record company's reluctance to release a double album at the time (which would have been necessary to include it) and it was left off.[2]
The band recorded a 23 minute demo with Derek Sherinian on keyboards to return to at a later date. Only 12 minutes of this demo are available to the public via the internet and even then Mike Portnoy, founder of YtseJam Records, which sells official Dream Theater bootlegs, has insisted that it not be shared. However, a 21:25 live instrumental run-through (with Sherinian on keys) can be found on the Falling Into Infinity demos, which were recently made available through YtseJam Records. When the band came to work on their fifth album, they returned to the song and made it a whole album.
While on tour following the record's release, Dream Theater played the album live in its entirety. In 2000, the final show of the North American leg was recorded and released on DVD as Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York on which the band members discuss the story of Scenes From A Memory.
This album is also the first by Dream Theater to feature Jordan Rudess on keyboards.
On the inside artwork, there is a picture showing the newspaper article and "suicide note" quoted in the lyrics. In the background of that shot, there is a copy of the book The Plumed Serpent by D. H. Lawrence. The title refers to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl who represented, among other things, resurrection and reincarnation. This fits with the theme of the album. Additionally, The Plumed Serpent is about a love triangle between a woman and two men – again, a theme of the album.

Songs
* The final album track started a musical experiment on Dream Theater's part. The static heard at the beginning of "The Glass Prison", the opening number of 2002's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, is the same static heard at the end of "Finally Free", this album's closing track. Similar connections would be featured on the following album Train of Thought, ending with the beginning of Octavarium's first track, "The Root of All Evil" in 2005.
* Musically, this album is similar to Dream Theater's earlier albums Images and Words and Awake[citation needed]. Their previous studio album, Falling Into Infinity, was criticised by fans for having a very mainstream sound[citation needed], and in response, this album was made in an extremely progressive fashion, featuring odd time signatures, and constant changes between them, as well as long instrumental sections.
* Throughout the album, sections of the song "Metropolis Part 1" are quoted frequently. For example, the keyboard heard in the opening to "Overture 1928" is the same as heard in the opening of the original "Metropolis", except tuned down one whole step.
* Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory was the last album that bassist John Myung wrote lyrics for.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002)
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (often abbreviated to SDOIT or 6DOIT) is the sixth full-length studio album by progressive metal band Dream Theater. It was released on January 29, 2002 by Elektra Records.

History
Fans' reactions to the album were mixed, with many pointing to the obvious differences between the two CDs as two different types of Dream Theater style. The first disc is generally seen as experimental and heavy while the second disc is seen to be more in line with the previous Scenes from a Memory.

Songs
* The first track of the first disc begins with the white noise that ended Scenes from a Memory, while the last track, Losing Time/Grand Finale ends with a long chord played by (synthesised) strings, which was also used as the intro to their next studio album, Train of Thought.

* The entire second disc is occupied by the 42-minute title song broken into 8 tracks.
* The first track of the album, "The Glass Prison," tells Mike Portnoy's story of rehabilitation from alcoholism. "The Glass Prison" is composed of three parts and Portnoy intends to extend the song into twelve parts that mirror the twelve steps of the AA program by Bill W. for rehabilitation of alcoholics. This song is continued in tracks on the next albums ("This Dying Soul" on Train of Thought, "The Root of All Evil" on Octavarium and "Repentance" on Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater's newest album).
* The Great Debate is a non-partisan song dealing with the topic of stem-cell research. Some parts of this song sound extremely similar to the central melody of the song "Forty-Six & 2" by the band Tool, specifically the part where the refrain of "life to save life" is sung by LaBrie.
* The recording is a type of concept album wherein the five songs which comprise the first disc explore different themes of lifetime struggle, such as Alcoholism, Loss of Faith and Death. The sixth song—-that is, the complete second disc—-explores the stories of six individuals suffering from various mental illnesses. Particularly represented are bipolar, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, post-partum depression, autism, and dissociative personality disorder.
* The musical styles of each section of the title track are direct reflections of the band's large variety of influences. Indeed, classical, folk and metal styles combine effortlessly within the track. Additionally, certain parts of the track are direct nods to specific songs from influential artists. The end of "Goodnight Kiss" bears an unquestionable resemblance to Kansas's "The Wall" from their Leftoverture album. "Solitary Shell" is a nod to Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" both in name and in musical style. Some fans see this as a citation, but others claim it's pure copying. Also, parts of "Solitary Shell" bear strong resistance to Billy Joel's song "The Entertainer," mainly due to the unique synth-organ which sounds alike in both songs, played over acoustic guitar.
* Influences for the album's writing and recording include Metallica's Master of Puppets, Tool's Ænima, Radiohead's The Bends (and also a Radiohead bootleg Mike brought in), Pantera's Far Beyond Driven, Megadeth's Rust in Peace, U2's Achtung Baby, Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, Soundgarden's Superunknown, Alice in Chains' Dirt, Kevin Gilbert's Thud, King's X's Faith Hope Love and Galactic Cowboys' Space in Your Face a Béla Bartók CD, Rage Against the Machine's The Battle of Los Angeles, Maria Tipo's Chopin Nocturnes and Tenacious D Wonder Boy.[1]
* "The Great Debate" was originally titled "Conflict at Ground Zero". "Disappear" was originally titled "Move On"[2].

Train of Thought (2003)

Train of Thought is the seventh full-length studio album by progressive metal band Dream Theater.

History
Inspired by the audience response to Dream Theater's heavier songs while on tour[1], Train of Thought is widely considered their heaviest album to date. The album was written in three weeks.[2] It was engineered by Doug Oberkircher and mixed by Kevin Shirley.[3]
There are some connections to previous and following albums of the band:

* The album has seven songs, while its predecessor (Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence) has six and its successor (Octavarium) has eight.
* The first song "As I Am" starts with the ending synth/orchestral chord of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and the ending piano note (F) of "In the Name of God" is the first note of Octavarium's "The Root of All Evil".
* "This Dying Soul" continues Mike Portnoy's Alcoholics Anonymous suite, started with "The Glass Prison" on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and later continued with Octavarium's "The Root of All Evil" and Systematic Chaos "Repentance". The songs share some of the lyrics and melodies.

Reception
The reception of the album by fans was and continues to be mixed. Some newer fans enjoy the harder, more straightforward metal sound. Many classic Dream Theater fans were disappointed with the style, though, and thought it was too mainstream and pandered to younger audiences. The angst and bitterness of songs like "As I Am" and "Honor Thy Father" bothered many fans that previously thought of Dream Theater as a more mature, less angst-filled progressive group. Regardless, "As I Am" is one of the most popular songs by the group in many metal-circles.

Some were dissapointed by the use of rap vocals in songs like "This Dying Soul" and "Honor Thy Father", writing off these attempts as nu metal, a trend that was popular at the time of this album's release. However, supporters of this argue that Dream Theater, being a progressive band, should be able to use means from any musical genre without care of being "true" to a certain genre.

Songs
* The Chant/Hymn at the end of "In the Name of God" (from 12:56 onwards, coming from the right-side speaker) is the American civil war hymn "Battle Hymn of the Republic".
* "Honor Thy Father" was written about Mike Portnoy's stepfather. When asked about what inspired him to write that song, he stated in an IRC chat: "I'm not very good at writing love songs, so I decided to write a HATE song!!!"[4]
* Between 05:51 and 06:07 of the song "In the Name of God", there was a hidden composition buried beneath the far louder sounds of the song itself which lay undiscovered for over a year and a half. The band did not tell anyone that a hidden "nugget" (as it became known amongst Dream Theater fans) was present in the song, and only when Mike Portnoy mentioned it in his Mike Portnoy: Live at Budokan Drum-Cam DVD over a year later did someone find it. The Mike Portnoy message board was rife with fans scouring the song looking for what it might be, until a fan going by the pseudonymous name "DarrylRevok" mentioned that from 05:51 to 06:07 there appeared to be morse code audible, which Nick Bogovich (user handle "Bogie") isolated and discovered that when translated to English, the phrase "eat my ass and balls" (a Mike Portnoy catchphrase) was the result.[5]
* The bridge of "In the Name of God" contains references to several noted cult leaders, including David Koresh, Marshall Applewhite, and Jim Jones.
* Stream of Consciousness is the longest Dream Theater instrumental to date (not counting live mash-ups such as Instrumedley).
* Some lyrics of As I Am were inspired by Dream Theater's 2003 summer tour with Queensryche, described by Mike Portnoy as an "irksome series of shows." According to Portnoy, Queensryche guitarist Mike Stone tried giving John Petrucci tips on playing guitar, leading Petrucci to write the lyrics.[citation needed]
* Jordan Rudess played the final note in the album (In The Name of God minute 14:8) with his nose as shown in Making The Train of Thought documentary, Mike Portnoy approved the take in the video while he was filming.

Track listing
1. "As I Am" – 7:47 (Petrucci)
2. "This Dying Soul" – 11:28 (Portnoy)
* "IV. Reflections of Reality (Revisited)"
* "V. Release"
3. "Endless Sacrifice" – 11:23 (Petrucci)
4. "Honor Thy Father" – 10:14 (Portnoy)
5. "Vacant" – 2:58 (LaBrie)
6. "Stream of Consciousness" – 11:16 (instrumental)
7. "In The Name of God" – 14:16 (Petrucci)

Octavarium (2005)
x
Octavarium is the eighth full-length Dream Theater studio album, released on June 7, 2005 (see 2005 in music).
It holds the distinction of being the last album ever recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City. According to the DVD Documentary in Score, John Petrucci considers this album to be their best work.

Songs
Octavarium follows a pattern started in Dream Theater's 6th studio album, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which had 6 songs and the word six in the title. The next album, Train of Thought, contained 7 tracks and was their 7th studio album. Octavarium, the 8th studio album by the band, follows both of these apparent "trends" with 8 songs and a title related to the number eight, as already mentioned. The pattern continues in a different form in their 9th studio album, Systematic Chaos, which has only 8 tracks, but the first track lasts exactly 9 minutes.

Every song of the album is in a different minor key, starting with F, then G, A, B, C, D, E, and returning to F. This is evident by the treble clef staves in the liner notes. Also, between some pairs of songs, a transition, represented in the CD as negative time preceding the second song of the pair, is made in the corresponding accidental key related to the pair in question. For instance, the synth solo following Panic Attack (in the key of C minor) is placed as negative time preceding Never Enough (in the key of D minor) and is in the key of C# minor.

Golden Ratio
This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims.
Please improve the article by adding references. See the talk page for details. (January 2008)

Many fans have made observations about recurring references to the golden ratio, in particular the number of 5s and 8s in the album art. The golden ratio is very common in art throughout history and in Nature itself. The name Octavarium itself has 5 syllables, while connotating 8. The use of 5s and 8s stems from the number of natural notes (white keys on a piano) and black keys (sharp/flat notes) in an octave. It may also refer to the number of members in the band from its inception in 1985 to 2005, Octavarium being the band's 8th studio album, and the subsequent "Score" being their fifth live album.

Several of the 5 and 8 references in the album are:
1. This is their 8th album and they have released 5 live DVDs.
2. The cover and back cover of the inlay show a Newton's Cradle with eight pendulums, and five birds in between them, arranged in the same pattern as black piano keys. (The black birds represent flats and sharps and the balls of the pendulum represent the natural notes.)
3. On the back of the album there are piano keys in an octave.
4. On the page 5 of the booklet, there are two dominoes summing up to 5 and 8.
5. On the page 7 of the booklet, there is a spider (which has eight legs) trapped inside an octagon-shaped maze. The maze is made of five layers and has eight doorways amongst the layers, and eight walls that form "dead ends".
6. On the page 11 of the booklet, there is an octopus (which has eight legs), five fish and an octagonal stop sign.
7. On the page 13 of the booklet, there is a plan in which a five-pointed star was drawn inside an octagon. The scale of the plan is stated to be 5:8.
8. On the insides of the the front and back covers of the booklet, there are two pictures of the same boy holding two ends of a can telephone. First picture is accompanied by 8 lines of capitalized text (track titles). Second picture is accompanied by 5 lines (band members' names).
9. The boy has 5 fingers showing in one picture, and the other picture only has 3 fingers showing. This adds up to eight.
10. The booklet itself has eight pages, if left and right pages are considered to be a single page.
11. On the inlay of the album, there is a billiards eight-ball.
12. The title track (Octavarium) comprises five movements and is the eighth track on the album.
13. On the actual cd, there is a star inside of an octagon, much like as described on page 13. Also, the star in the octagon has musical keys written around it that go in a circle of fifths.
14. The song "Panic Attack" - Track 5 - lasts 8:13; 5, 8, and 13 are all consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, which uses the Golden Ratio.
15. Octavarium, The title track, is 24 minutes long. 8 goes into 24 three times. Add this to the number of movements (5) to get 8 again.
16. In the booklet, the time signature shown in "Panic Attack" is 5/8 time. The bass introduction also has a 5/8 feel.
17. The word "Octavarium" is 5 syllables long.
18. The Newton's Cradle on the cover and the musical hooks connecting all the songs together lyrically and melodically have also given rise to the theory that the entire album is intended to be a concept album portraying continuity.

Dream Theater have often placed riffs or parts of other band's songs into their songs when playing live. On this album, there are several examples of this.

* Before the beginning of "Trial of Tears", John Petrucci plays the famous five tone motif from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
* The opening of "Trial of Tears" also contains portions of the Rush songs "Xanadu" and "The Trees".
* "Peruvian Skies" contains portions of Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar and Metallica's Enter Sandman.
* The end of Take the Time contains the outro solo from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" and the guitar riff from Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick".
* John Petrucci's guitar solo is almost entirely comprised of Liquid Tension Experiment's "Acid Rain" and parts of "Paradigm Shift". It also contains a portion of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee
* The segue from "Just Let Me Breathe" into "Voices" features John Petrucci playing the first half of the Force Theme from "Star Wars".

Live Scenes From New York (2001)
Live Scenes from New York is a 3CD live album by progressive metal band Dream Theater, recorded on August 30, 2000, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Live Scenes from New York is the audio counterpart to the Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York DVD, released in early 2001.

It was originally released on September 11, 2001, but when it was noticed that the cover artwork depicted the twin towers of the World Trade Center in flames, it was recalled and re-released a short time later. Some copies with the original artwork still exist, and are now a rare collectors item.

Score (2006)
Score is a 3CD/2DVD combination by progressive metal band Dream Theater. It is a live album, recorded on April 1, 2006 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. This is the final concert of their 20th Anniversary Tour, labeled "A Very Special Evening with Dream Theater". The entire second half of the concert features a complete symphonic orchestra, dubbed "The Octavarium Orchestra", conducted by Jamshied Sharifi.

The album was released on August 29, 2006 and contains the entire concert setlist, including the encore. A condensed version of the concert was aired on VH1 Classic on August 25, 2006, 4 days before the release of the album and DVD.

The name of the album comes from the word "score", meaning the number twenty. It was chosen in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dream Theater. "Score" could also mean a conductor's musical score, parts of which are used on the packaging imagery. Given Octavarium's references to the numbers five and eight, it is interesting to note that at the time of Score's release, Dream Theater had, in their discography, five live albums and eight studio albums.
Two of the songs recorded on this album were previously unreleased: "Another Won", a song written by the band when they were still named Majesty, and "Raise The Knife", a song left off of Falling Into Infinity.
In Australia, the 3 CD boxset was released on September 2, 2006.
On October 15th, 2006, Score was certified platinum by the RIAA.

Greatest Hit
(...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)
Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) is a compilation album by progressive metal band Dream Theater released by Rhino Records on April 1, 2008.[1] The title alludes to their only Top-10 radio hit, "Pull Me Under". It features three songs from their breakthrough album Images and Words remixed by Kevin Shirley: "Pull Me Under", "Take the Time", and "Another Day". It also features the song "To Live Forever", from the Images and Words sessions and B-side of the "Lie" single, which was previously unreleased on studio albums.
