Demos, singles and EPs
(1990) Towards the Sinister (demo)
Towards The Sinister is the first demo release by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride after their intense 6 month rehearsal period in 1990. The entire demo was recorded and mixed at Revolver Studios on the 24th and 25th of November, 1990 and was produced by Tim Walker. The demo contains low sound quality due to using old and low-budget sound equipment. After the release of the demo tape in 1990, the band had no problem with sales of the Listenable Records EP "God Is Alone", which attracted the attention of Peaceville Records, with whom the band has signed ever since.
Track listing

2. "Vast Choirs" – 7:20
3. "The Grief of Age" – 4:00
4. "Catching Feathers" – 3:34
Song Information
"Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" was recorded and released as a single in 1992. "Vast Choirs" was re-recorded and released on the debut album "As the Flower Withers". "The Grief Of Age" and "Catching Feathers" have never been re-recorded. All four tracks from the demo have been re-released. "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" and "The Grief of Age" appear on the 2000 compilation "Meisterwerk 1", and "Vast Choirs" and "Catching Feathers" appear on both "Meisterwerk 2" and the 2004 reissue of "Trinity".

(1991) God Is Alone (7")
God Is Alone is the first EP by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride, and was released in 1991. It was released as a 7" vinyl on France-based independent label Listenable Records, and limited to 1,000 copies.
The EP saw the band approached by Peaceville Records, who offered them a recording contract. My Dying Bride have been recording for Peaceville ever since.
Both tracks were re-recorded as B-Sides for the band's first release with Peaceville, "Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium" the following year. The original versions have never been commercially re-released, unlike the rest of the band's rare material.
As a side note, God Is Alone is also the title to an underground movie written and directed by Jason Torrey in 2004. The movie is hard to find because it was never officially published due to the many copyright infringements for using music by My Dying Bride, Opeth, Morbid Angel, God Dethroned, Slayer, and Shadows Fall. Aaron Stainthorpe, the singer of My Dying Bride, owns his own copy of the movie, it was given to him by the young director when it was discovered by the singer from information on the internet.

(1991) Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium (EP)
Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium is the second EP by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride. "Symphonaire" was made only a few months after signing to the Peaceville Records label. The song was also released as a vinyl record and an audio tape. The artwork was designed and created by Dave McKean, who also designed some of the band's other sleeves including "As the Flower Withers" and "The Thrash of Naked Limbs".
The EP was the band's first release as a 5-piece, following the introduction of bassist Adrian Jackson. The title track was originally recorded for the band's first demo, "Towards the Sinister". This version can be found on the compilation album "Meisterwerk 1". "God Is Alone" and "De Sade Soliloquay" were both first recorded for the EP "God Is Alone". These versions have not been re-released since their original appearance.
The EP was also released as part of the limited box-set, "The Stories", alongside the band's other singles, "The Thrash of Naked Limbs" and "I Am the Bloody Earth". All three were released on one disc on the compilation "Trinity" in 1995.
The song's video, available on "For Darkest Eyes" features bizarre imagery and slow-motion footage of the band members walking through the wilderness. The video version of the song is the edited version that appears as "Act 1" on the vinyl release of the EP. "Act 2" is the section of the songs which begins at 5:15 in the full-length version.
Live versions of the title track are available on "The Voice of the Wretched" and in the bonus features of the DVD version of "For Darkest Eyes".

(1992) The Thrash of Naked Limbs (Single)
The Thrash of Naked Limbs is the third EP by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride. This EP was also released as an vinyl record.
By this time, the band was a 6-piece, having added session violinist and keyboardist Martin Powell as an official band member.
The EP was also released as part of the very limited box-set, "The Stories", alongside the band's other singles, "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" and "I Am the Bloody Earth". All three were released on one disc on the compilation "Trinity" in 1995.
The song's video, available on "For Darkest Eyes" features much slow motion footage of a girl writhing in her sleep, interspersed with barely visible footage of the band walking with torches. The video wersion of the song is an edited version, two minutes or so shorter than the EP version.
A live versions of the title track is available on "For Darkest Eyes".
The cover artwork was designed by Dave McKean.
Song Information
The title track is a straightforward doom/death metal song, shifting from a very slow opening to a very fast middle section and back again. Structurally, it is very similar to the track "Sear Me" from the band's debut, "As the Flower Withers". Whilst the third track, "Gather Me Up Forever" is too very similar to the doomier material from the band's earliest days, the middle track "Le Cerf Malade" (French for "The Dying Stag") is an atmospheric soundscape, without any guitars or vocals. The song features minimal ethnic percussion and is heavily keyboard-orientated, yet cannot be said to have any notable melody or tune. This song stands unique in the My Dying Bride catalogue as the only one of its style.
"Le Cerf Malade" also appears as a bonus track on the 2003 reissue of "Turn Loose the Swans".

(1993) Unreleased Bitterness (7")
Unreleased Bitterness is a 7" EP release by death/doom metal band My Dying Bride. The track is an early rehearsal recording of the song "The Bitterness and the Bereavement", which appeared on the "As The Flower Withers" album.
This 7" was released by a friend of the band - with full permission - on the Unbridled Voyage label. Only 1,150 copies were ever produced. It was pressed on a one-sided Flexi disc, likely to save costs. In recent years, the manufacturer of the record revealed on the band's message board that he still had a fair few of them "in a box, under the bed", without sleeves.

(1994) I Am the Bloody Earth (Single)
I Am the Bloody Earth is a three-track EP, released by British doom metal band My Dying Bride on 24 January 1994.
The EP was released as part of the very limited box-set, "The Stories", alongside the band's other singles, "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" and "The Thrash of Naked Limbs". All three were released on one disc on the compilation "Trinity" in 1995, although the Trinity release of the EP replaces "Transcending(Into The Exquisite)" with "The Sexuality Of Bereavement" for no obvious reason. "Transcending" was later released on the reissued "Turn Loose The Swans".
The song's video is available on "For Darkest Eyes".
The lead track uses both the death grunting of the debut album and the slower, more mournful pace of "Turn Loose the Swans". The track also features guest vocals by Ghost of GGFH. Track 2 is a House remix by Stevie Dachau, containing elements of various tracks from "Turn Loose the Swans", most prominently "The Songless Bird". The final track is a remix of the "Turn Loose the Swans" track, "The Crown of Sympathy".

Albums
1992 - As the Flower Withers
As the Flower Withers was the first album by Yorkshire-based doom metal band My Dying Bride.
Lyrically, Aaron Stainthorpe was at his most uncompromisingly elaborate. When he was not invoking Latin in asking his audiences to incinerate an unnamed ‘her’ (‘Sear Me’), he was staging an epic battle between God and nature (‘The Return Of The Beautiful’). Lines such as "Stricken I’d raise my dripping limbs" and "Bare witness to this orgy of glory" are typical of the poetic extravagances that Stainthorpe employed on this debut full-length.
As far as it is possible to generalise, most of the music on As the Flower Withers stretched traditional death metal almost to its limits. There are long, drawn-out passages, and these provided a counterpoint to the time-honoured galloping detuned guitar that followed. Stainthorpe's vocals are all growls and grunts, but they are occasionally underscored by violin and keyboard sections – as in "The Bitterness and the Bereavement" and "The Return of the Beautiful".
As the Flower Withers was one of the albums that launched the doom death metal hybrid in the underground metal scene, and gave a taste of the gloomy depths that would be plumbed on albums such as 1995's The Angel and the Dark River. Contemporaries such as Paradise Lost and Anathema would also contribute to the rise of the doom death metal genre.
The artwork was designed by Dave McKean.
Song Information
Many of the tracks on this album have appeared in a different form on other MDB releases. "Sear Me" was the first in a trilogy of songs to bear the title, followed by the keyboard and violin-only "Sear Me MCMXCIII" in 1993 and "Sear Me III" in 1999, which is more similar in style to the original, being a full band composition. "The Bitterness And The Bereavement" evolved from an earlier demo, which was released independently as "Unreleased Bitterness" in 1993. This version of the song also appears on the digipak re-release of "As The Flower Withers", and on the rarities/best-of compilation "Meisterwerk 1". "Vast Choirs" is a reworked version of the version that appears on the band's first recording, "Towards the Sinister". This version is widely available on both "Meisterwerk 2" and the 2004 reissue of "Trinity". "The Return Of The Beautiful" was re-recorded for 2001's "The Dreadful Hours". Live versions of "The Forever People" can be found on the limited edition versions of "The Angel and the Dark River" and "For Darkest Eyes". This song is often played as the last song of the set in many of the band's live shows.

The third and final track is a live audio version of "A Kiss to Remember", as featured on My Dying Bride's Sinamorata DVD.
A video for "Deeper Down" is featured on the limited edition "A Line of Deathless Kings" CD. It was directed by Charlie Granberg, who also directed Katatonia's "My Twin" and "Deliberation" videos.

Albums
1992 - As the Flower WithersAs the Flower Withers was the first album by Yorkshire-based doom metal band My Dying Bride.

1993 - Turn Loose The Swans
Turn Loose the Swans was the second album by the British doom metal band My Dying Bride.
It marked a radical departure from the band's first full length, As the Flower Withers. Martin Powell's violin playing had become fully integrated into the band's sound, whilst vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe mixed death metal growls and grunts with the spoken word and an often plaintive singing voice. The first ("Sear Me MCMXCIII") and final ("Black God") tracks dispensed with electric guitar altogether, while the album was also far slower and longer than its predecessor. For these reasons, "Turn Loose the Swans" is often considered to be important in the development of the doom metal/death metal hybrid pioneered by My Dying Bride and fellow Peaceville bands Anathema and Paradise Lost.
Though far from straightforward, Aaron Stainthorpe's lyrics were much less complex than those employed on As the Flower Withers. He abstained from the use of non-English phrases, and explicitly addressed themes such as Christianity and lovelorn longing. "Black God" took its lyrics from the last eight lines of a poem called "Ah! The Shepherd's Mournful Fate" by the 18th century Scottish poet William Hamilton.
The artwork for the release was designed and created by Aaron Stainthorpe.
Song Information
* "Sear Me MCMXCIII" was the second in a trilogy of songs to bear the title, preceded by the doom-metal orientated "Sear Me" in 1993 and followed by "Sear Me III" in 1999, which is similar in style to the original, being a full band composition. The version on this album however, features only the vocals of Aaron Stainthorpe and the keyboards and violin of Martin Powell. It also features different lyrics to the other two versions.
* A video was made for "The Songless Bird" which features slow motion footage of the band running through wilderness, at this stage becoming something of a tradition. The video can be found on "For Darkest Eyes".
* A remix of "The Crown Of Sympathy" was featured on the band's third single, "I Am the Bloody Earth". This version of the song featured more echoing effects, and a heavy emphasis on Rick Miah's drum sound.
* The 2003 reissue of the album featured as bonus tracks; "Le Cerf Malade", and instrumental from "The Thrash Of Naked Limbs", "Transcending(Into The Exquisite)", a remix of songs from this album taken from the later EP "I Am the Bloody Earth", and a live performance of "Your Shameful Heaven" from the bonus CD of "The Angel and the Dark River".
* Live versions of songs from this album can be found on "For Darkest Eyes" (all songs except "Black God") and "The Voice of the Wretched" (Turn Loose The Swans, The Snow In My Hand and Your River).

The Angel and The Dark River
The Angel and the Dark River is the third album by the British doom/death metal band My Dying Bride. The 1996 re-release contains one bonus track "The Sexuality Of Bereavement" and a bonus CD titled Live at the Dynamo. The Live CD was recorded during their appearance at the Dynamo Festival in 1995.
It was arguably the release that saw the band travel furthest from their death metal origins, and provided the fullest expression of the doom metal side of their music. Aaron Stainthorpe dispensed with his death metal vocals entirely, and Martin Powell's violin and keyboard playing now seemed to be the basis around which the rest of the arrangement was built. Apart from the final track of the original release ("Your Shameful Heaven"), the tempo was unremittingly slow, with only the odd fast drum fill from Rick Miah adding some variety.
Aaron Stainthorpe's lyrics continued in the vein of Turn Loose the Swans - focusing on religious symbolism and relationship problems - whilst non-English phrases were omitted once more. Stainthorpe has said in many interviews that "Two Winters Only" is his favourite My Dying Bride song.
Five of the album's six tracks appear on the band's VHS and DVD For Darkest Eyes.
Track listing
1. "The Cry of Mankind" – 12:13
2. "From Darkest Skies" – 7:48
3. "Black Voyage" – 9:46

1996 - Like Gods of the Sun
Like Gods of the Sun is an album by My Dying Bride. The song "For My Fallen Angel" has an extract from a poem called Venus and Adonis by the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare. This is the last album to feature Rick Miah on drums and Martin Powell on keyboards and violins. Like its predecessor The Angel and the Dark River, this album has completely clean vocals. A video was filmed for "For You" and appears on the VHS and DVD of For Darkest Eyes. Singer Aaron Stainthorpe has stated many times that this is his favourite MDB album. The track "A Kiss To Remember" has long since become a regular in the band's live setlist. The Japanese and limited digipak editions of the album feature the bonus remix "It Will Come (Nightmare Mix)". This track was included on the 2003 reissue of the album alongside an additional remix of the song "Grace Unhearing", credited as "Portishell Mix". The song was thus named as Stainthorpe was at the time a big fan of the British band Portishead. The band would later perform a cover of the Portishead song "Roads" for the Peaceville Records anniversary compilation "Peaceville X". The cover artwork was designed by Andy Green.

-1998 - 34.788 % ... Complete
34.788%...Complete is an album by My Dying Bride. It demonstrated a foray into a more electronic style of music, which was not generally popular with fans and was abandoned on subsequent albums. That said, the band has defended the album, with guitarist Andrew Craighan maintaining that the album is full of My Dying Bride riffs which are hidden somewhat in the production. The track "Under Your Wings And Into Your Arms" is till a live setlist standard, appearing on both the The Voice of the Wretched CD and the Sinamorata DVD.
The Japanese version of the album featured a bonus track, entitled "Follower". This track was also featured on the 2003 re-release digipak of the album.
The album was dedicated to the memory of Richard Jackson, father of bassist Adrian.
This is the only album by My Dying Bride to feature the drumming of Bill Law. It is also the first not to feature long-time keyboardist and violinist Martin Powell, who would become a full-time member of Cradle Of Filth shortly after the album was released.
The spoken word interlude during "The Whore, The Cook and The Mother" is based on the simulant interrogation method from the movie Blade Runner. Questions are asked in Japanese and reversed, and singer Aaron Stainthorpe's replies can be heard.
The album's title was derived from a dream former guitarist Calvin Robertshaw had where he was told the human race had a limited lifespan, 34.788% of which had already expired.

1999 - The Light At the End of the World
The Light at the End of the World is an album by My Dying Bride, released in 1999. After the more experimental 34.788%...Complete, this album marks a return to the more traditional My Dying Bride doom sound and style of lyrics. It is also the first My Dying Bride release since 1994's "The Sexuality of Bereavement" to feature growling vocals, although Aaron Stainthorpe has noticeably changed his style and broadened his range. All guitar parts on the album were recorded by Andrew Craighan, following the earlier departure of Calvin Robertshaw. Following Robertshaw's departure, only Craighan and Stainthorpe remained as founding members of the band. Hamish Glencross was soon after recruited as permanent guitarist. The keyboard parts were played by Jonny Maudling of Bal-Sagoth. It is also the first MDB album to feature the drumming of Shaun Steels, who would remain with the band until 2006.
As the album's total playing time is almost 80 minutes, when the CD was reissued in 2003, it contained no bonus tracks.
Apparently, this is Andrew Craighan's favourite MDB album.
Track listing

2. "Edenbeast" – 11:22
3. "The Night He Died" – 6:25
4. "The Light at the End of the World" – 10:35

7. "The Isis Script" – 7:08
8. "Christliar" – 10:30

Song Information
"She Is The Dark" and "The Fever Sea" have become live regulars since this release, each appearing on both "The Voice of the Wretched" and "Sinamorata". "Sear Me III" is the third in a trilogy of songs to bear the title, preceded by the keyboard and violin-only "Sear Me MCMXCIII" in 1993 and "Sear Me" in 1991, which is more similar in style to the third incarnation, being a full band composition.

A Line of Deathless Kings is the ninth studio album by My Dying Bride. It was released on October 9, 2006.
A video for "Deeper Down" is featured on the CD version of the album. It was directed by Charlie Granberg, who also directed Katatonia's "My Twin" and "Deliberation" videos. A limited edition of the album comes in a hard clamshell case with a double sided poster and five postcards, depicting the full-time members of the band. Session drummer and ex-Prophecy member John Bennett is not included. This is the only album on which he appears, and he did not tour with the band or take part in any photo shoots. He replaced previous drummer Shaun Steels who left the band after a repeated leg injury meant he could not drum full-time for fear of worsening his condition. This echoes how Rick Miah left the band in 1997 after falling ill with Crohn's disease.
Following the release of this album, Dan Mullins joined the band as its permanent drummer, and Lena Abé replaced the departed Adrian Jackson on bass.
The album was preceded by the EP Deeper Down on 18 September 2006.
