Dreaming Neon Black (1999)
x
Dreaming Neon Black is the third full-length album released by Seattle metal band Nevermore, and was released through Century Media in 1999. Unlike its predecessor, The Politics of Ecstasy, this album is very emotional and contains many slower, ballad-type songs. It is also notable that Dreaming Neon Black is a concept album of sorts, telling the tale of a man's slow plunge into insanity following the death of his girlfriend, which may be based on an event in the life of Nevermore's lead singer, Warrel Dane. Supposedly, Dane's old girlfriend left him when she joined a religious cult and was never heard from again, and he began having nightmares of her crying out to him as she drowned. This has been confirmed by Warrel himself in an older interview. The spoken word sample from the tracks "Ophidian" and "Forever" is from the Clive Barker movie, Lord of Illusions. Clocking in at 65 minutes and 59 seconds, it is the longest Nevermore album to date, next to the album that came before it, The Politics of Ecstasy.

Track listing
1. "Ophidian" — 0:46
2. "Beyond Within" — 5:11
3. "The Death of Passion" — 4:10
4. "I Am the Dog" — 4:13
5. "Dreaming Neon Black" — 6:26
6. "Deconstruction" — 6:39
7. "The Fault of the Flesh" — 4:54
8. "The Lotus Eaters" — 4:25
9. "Poison Godmachine" — 4:33
10. "All Play Dead" — 4:58
11. "Cenotaph" — 4:39
12. "No More Will" — 5:45
13. "Forever" — 9:20

Enemies of Reality (2003)
x
Enemies of Reality is progressive metal band Nevermore's fifth album released in 2003 by Century Media records. A special limited edition was also released, with a black jewel case and a bonus DVD. It contains intense neo-classical guitar solos by guitarist Jeff Loomis. The worms on the album cover are a direct reference to the lyrics of the title track, "Enemies of Reality", in which Warrel Dane sings, "Open wide and eat the worms of the enemy." There are other lyric-inspired images in the booklet, namely an open hand holding a glowing sun (taken from "Ambivalent," where the lyrics say "The sun in my hand becomes my despair"). At the beginning of the song there is message played backwards that repeats the pre-chorus "we are the useless by-product of souless meat".

This album is infamous for its widely-disliked production by Kelly Gray. Many fans felt that the mix was inferior to that of previous albums and did not do the band or its music justice; specifically, various complaints noted flat drums, distant vocals, and a lack of "punch" to the bass, and the guitars sounding very modern nu metal. In 2005 the album was remixed by Andy Sneap, who produced Nevermore's previous album, Dead Heart in a Dead World, and would also produced the following album:This Godless Endeavor.

At the end of the CD booklet is a dedication to the late Death frontman Chuck Schuldiner, which reads: "This record is dedicated to Chuck. Let the metal flow into eternity..."

Track listing
1. "Enemies of Reality" – 5:11
2. "Ambivalent" – 4:12
3. "Never Purify" – 4:03
4. "Tomorrow Turned into Yesterday" – 4:35
5. "I, Voyager" – 5:48
6. "Create the Infinite" – 3:38
7. "Who Decides" – 4:15
8. "Noumenon" – 4:37
9. "Seed Awakening" – 4:30

Limited Edition DVD Tracklist
1. "Believe in Nothing" (video)
2. "Next in Line" (video)
3. "What Tomorrow Knows" (video)
4. "Engines of Hate" (live U.S. 2001)

This Godless Endeavor (2005)
x
This Godless Endeavor is progressive metal band Nevermore's sixth album, and was released on July 26, 2005. The album was produced by Andy Sneap and is distributed by Century Media Records.

One might note that the track "A Future Uncertain" has very similar lyrics to the track "World Unborn" from their 1992 demos, although the music is completely different. The Musical style of the album goes towards a more progressive style fasion, much like The Politics of Ecstasy.

In the middle of the song "Sentient 6" there is a message played backwards that says "I am the bringer of the end, fear me, I am the beast that is technology." "Sentient 6" refers to a robot or an android that has been programmed to annihilate humankind, but actually envies humanity for their possession of emotion and a soul. The content is paradoxical and written from the perspective of the machine. The song also picks up lyrically where "The Learning" left off in The Politics of Ecstasy. In addition, it seems to have many parallels with the story of V'ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The album is rumored to be a concept album about the Apocalypse, along with notes about the demise of society and values. However, guitarist Jeff Loomis revealed in an interview that it is not a concept album, but a "topic-to-topic" album, with all the songs dealing with "real life issues" that can " allegorically refer to the loss of identity, the system that we roove in, the meaning of life, the denouncement of god as a solution to all the problems that are caused by the conflicts that all the religions have initiated in various parts of the world. It's basically about human beings." It has also been said that it is Warrel Dane's "somewhat apocalyptic" vision of the future.

This album was ranked number 88 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time.[1]

Track listing
1. "Born (The Retribution of Spiritual Sickness)" – 5:05
2. "Final Product" – 4:21
3. "My Acid Words" – 5:41
4. "Bittersweet Feast" – 5:01
5. "Sentient 6" – 6:58
6. "Medicated Nation" – 4:01
7. "The Holocaust of Thought" – 1:27
8. "Sell My Heart For Stones" – 5:18
9. "The Psalm of Lydia" – 4:16
10. "A Future Uncertain" – 6:07
11. "This Godless Endeavor" – 8:55

Demos
Nightwish 1996
Nightwish is the first demo by Nightwish. It's untitled, but it's known under the name "Nightwish" today. Recorded from October to December of 1996, it is an acoustic album on which Emppu played acoustic guitars. The group's name, "Nightwish", comes from the first song they recorded together, and the demo included this song along with "The Forever Moments" and "Etiäinen". The first idea of the band was to create music much like the music played around campfires. However, after this recording Tuomas Holopainen decided that Turunen's operatic voice was too powerful for a project like this one, and decided to add in metal elements. The speaking in the intro of "Etiäinen" is spoken by Tuomas. All songs were composed by Tuomas. "Etiäinen" was later re-recorded as "Lappi (Lapland) Part IV: Etiäinen" and released on Angels Fall First. The song "The Forever Moments" was also re-recorded and released as part of "Lappi (Lapland)," although it was re-titled "This Moment is Eternity" and is part III of "Lappi (Lapland)."01. 1997 - Angels Fall First
"Angels Fall First" is the debut album of the Finnish symphonic metal band, Nightwish. It was released in 1997 by Spinefarm Records. The limited edition, of which only 500 copies were released, features only seven tracks, two of which are not on the regular edition.

Even though the only single, The Carpenter reached number three on the Finnish single chart, Nightwish failed to reach national fame until the release of their second studio album, Oceanborn.

The male vocals appearing on "Beauty and the Beast", "The Carpenter", "Astral Romance" and "Once Upon a Troubadour" are sung by Tuomas Holopainen. "Elvenpath" uses aidio-clips from the prologue of The Lord of the Rings, directed by Ralph Bakshi. The track on the limited edition is the same track that was on their second demo, which was also titled Angels Fall First.

"Angels Fall First" is generally considered to be the band's least worthwhile release (although it has been averagely ranked with a 92% at Encyclopaedia Metallum media database),and the songs from it are hardly ever played at concerts. In 2005 (before beng fired from Nightwish) vocalist Tarja Turunen expressed that she would like to start playing some tracks from Angels Fall First again. These songs will probably not appear in future Nightwish concerts because the band's new vocalist, Anette Olzon, does not have the soprano vocal ability required for most of the songs.

1998 - Oceanborn
Oceanborn is the second album by Nightwish, released in October 1998. Oceanborn is one of their darker albums, making use of the harsh male vocals of Tapio Wilska in songs like The Pharaoh Sails To Orion and Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean.

Most of the album is fantasy oriented with tracks like Swanheart and Walking In The Air although other songs had a more religious feel to them, such as Gethsemane. In addition, there were also some theatrical tracks like Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean.

Since the release, "Sacrament of Wilderness" has stayed a fan favorite on concert, and it is still often performed. Both "Sleeping Sun" and "Walking in the Air" has also been performed often on shows, but "Walking in the Air" was given up with vocalist Tarja Turunen's dismissal in 2005, as was "Stargazers". The "hoi'ing" in Moondance is done by Tuomas Holopainen, Jukka Nevalainen and Tapio Wilska, making it the only Nightwish song with vocals by Jukka. Gethsemane is often mistakenly titled "Gothic Sanctuary".

2000 - Wishmaster
Wishmaster is the third album by Nightwish, released July 18, 2000 by Spinefarm Records.

Perhaps even moreso than its predecessor, Wishmaster has a very clear fantasy-theme. While commonly considered to be closer to more conventional Heavy Metal, there is still a great variety with slower songs like Come Cover Me and Two For Tragedy, and more epic pieces like Dead Boy's Poem and FantasMic.

The Kinslayer is written about the victims of the Columbine High School massacre.[1] Wishmaster was influenced by the Lord of the Rings and Dragonlance fantasy novels, mentioning Elbereth, Lorien, and the Grey Havens from the former; and Dalamar, Raistlin Majere (Dalamar's shalafi, or "master"), and the Inn of the Last Home from the latter.[1]. FantasMic is a song about the Disney animated movies, particularly their fantasy and fable elements, taking its title from the Disneyland show Fantasmic!.

The song "Wishmaster" has stayed one of Nightwish' greatest hits, featuring on several best of-compilations as well as climbing to a steady eight position at Last.fm[2]. Since its release, it has been a recurring track on live performances, and it featured for example on the live DVD "End of an Era", recorded in 2005. It is still (2008) often played live despite the band's change of vocalist. Other recurring live songs from the album are for example "She is My Sin" and "The Kinslayer".

Over the Hills and Far Away EP 2001
Over the Hills and Far Away is an EP by the symphonic power metal band Nightwish, released in 2001 by both Spinefarm Records and Drakkar Records. It is their first, as well only EP. It was released in the United States in 2004 by Century Media Records. The bassist Sami Vänskä would leave the band after the recording of this album, due to musical differences between him and Tuomas. Sami would be replaced by the current bassist and vocalist, Marco Hietala.

2002 - Century Child
Century Child is the fourth album by Nightwish, released in 2002 by Spinefarm Records.

The album is a notable departure from previous Nightwish outings, aurally and mentally. It contains orchestral backing, an ethereal production, a much-more streamlined vocal work from Tarja Turunen, screaming vocals from Marco in songs like "Slaying the Dreamer" and the lyrics portray the strongest concept album undercurrents yet. This could also be considered one of Nightwish's darkest albums.

2004 - Once
Once is the fifth studio album by Nightwish, released June 7, 2004 by Nuclear Blast Records. Spinefarm Records also released a platinum edition of this album on November 24, 2004, containing the original tracks in addition to Live to Tell the Tale, White Night Fantasy and the video for Nemo by Antti Jokinen. The North American version of Once contains the video for Wish I Had an Angel instead.

During the first week of its release, Once entered the German, Finnish, Norwegian and Greek charts as number one, selling over 80,000 copies in Germany alone. It was also the first Nightwish album to chart in the U.S., reaching #42 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. It was also the band's first album to chart in UK, reaching #102. In May, Nemo was the first single to be released from this album, followed by Wish I Had an Angel in September, Kuolema tekee taiteilijan (only in Finland) in November and The Siren in July 2005.

Once is the last of the Nightwish studio albums to feature vocals by Tarja Turunen.

The single Nemo topped the charts in Finland and Hungary, and reached the top ten in five additional countries. "Nemo" therefore remains their most successful single release to date.

In an interview Tuomas Holopainen (main song writer of the band) said that it is up to the listener to find out the meaning of the title Once. Every name has a meaning - though, he doesn't feel comfortable talking about it.[1]

The cover features the sculpture Angel of Grief by William Wetmore Story.

Once utilizes a full orchestra in nine of the eleven songs on the album. Unlike Century Child, Nightwish decided to look for an orchestra outside of Finland this time, choosing the London Session Orchestra, which also features in their sixth studio album, Dark Passion Play. It is also their second album to feature a full-length song in Finnish, "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" (English: "Death Makes an Artist"). Once has sold triple platinum in Finland, platinum in Germany, gold in Sweden and reached #1 in the Greek, Norwegian, Hungarian and European album charts. The following singles were: "Wish I Had an Angel" (featured on the soundtrack of the Alone in the Dark film), "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" (released only in Finland and Japan) and "The Siren".

2007 - Dark Passion Play
is the sixth studio album by Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish. It was released on September 26, 2007 in Finland, on September 28 in Europe and on October 2, 2007 in the United States. It is the first album to feature the band's new lead vocalist, Anette Olzon, and the first without former vocalist Tarja Turunen, due to her departure in October 2005.

Lead songwriter Tuomas Holopainen has referred to it as the 'album that saved his life'.[3]

At 75:43 minutes, it is their longest album yet, 15 minutes longer than the second (Once).

The album spawned five singles: "Eva", the album's lead single, was released on May 25, 2007[4] as a download-only single to charity; "Amaranth", released on August 22; Erämaan Viimeinen, which was released on December 5 in Finland only; "Bye Bye Beautiful", released on February 15, 2008 and "The Islander" is to be released with a music video on May 21.

At least three music videos have so far been filmed to accompany the album's singles. The first two, "Amaranth" and "Bye Bye Beautiful" were both shot in Los Angeles, USA in spring 2007 and cost 270,000€.[5] The "Amaranth" video was released together with the single on August 22, 2007, and "Bye Bye Beautiful" will be released together with the single on February 15. The third music video was "The Islander", and it was completed in October, 2007, in Rovaniemi, Finland.[6] Holopainen has said that they first didn't plan to shoot another video for "Dark Passion Play", but when they were offered a town with classical Finnish nature, they couldn't say no. He has said that the video for once has something in common with the song. Read more...

End of innocent live 2003
End of Innocence is the second official DVD release of the Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish. The DVD features numerous clips of the band performing livetracks, including a recording of the band performing one of their first songs; "Beauty and the Beast", with bassist Marco Hietala performing the male vocal part. (In the past this part was performed by Tuomas Holopainen or Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica).

However, unlike most music DVDs, the main portion of the disc is dedicated to the End of Innocence Documentary, which involves a long interview with Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboards), Jukka Nevalainen (Drums) and Tapio Wilska (Guest musician and friend of the band, also ex-vocalist of Finntroll), as well as several short clips of the band performing, playing pranks on support bands, recording in the studio and generally having fun.

The limited edition also includes a live CD, called Live at Summer Breeze 2002, which included the tracks "End of All Hope", "Dead to the World", "10th Man Down", "Slaying the Dreamer", "Over the Hills and Far Away", "Sleeping Sun", "The Kinslayer" and "Come Cover Me".

End of an Era
End of an Era is a DVD and double CD from the Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish. It is a recording of their live performance at the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland on October 21, 2005, the final concert of a long worldwide tour for their album Once. During the concert the band was joined on-stage by Lakota musician John Two-Hawks, who performed "Stone People" from his album Honor as an introduction to "Creek Mary's Blood", which featured his voice and cedar flutes. End of An Era is the final Nightwish production to feature Tarja Turunen on vocals. She and the rest of the band parted mere hours after this concert. The name of the album most likely refers to this. Two significant covers appear, their known cover of Gary Moore's song, but also a cover of Pink Floyd's High Hopes also appears.

The DVD also contains a 55 minute documentary about the fifteen days prior to the concert, "A Day Before Tomorrow.", and a photo gallery.

Highest Hopes is the third compilation album by Nightwish. Their first, Tales from the Elvenpath, was considered incomplete by many fans as it contains only tracks from Oceanborn, Over the Hills and Far Away, Wishmaster and Century Child; leaving out Angels Fall First and missing the later released Once. This compilation, though, contains songs from all previously-released Nightwish albums, plus a cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" (live version on the limitied edition).

Highest Hopes was released in three different formats: standard, special edition and extended 2 CD. In addition to the normal version, a special edition was released, omitting the song "Deep Silent Complete" and replacing it with the popular cover version of The Phantom of the Opera theme, it also contains a bonus DVD disc containing three full songs filmed live at the Mera Luna Festival in Hildesheim, Germany in 2003. The extended version is a 2-CD compilation and includes a bonus DVD disc containing ten full songs filmed live at the Mera Luna Festival in Hildesheim, Germany in 2003. All versions feature a new (2005) recording of the song "Sleeping Sun" and a live version of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" from which this compilation takes its name.
The album was certified platinum in Finland – for sales exceeding 40,000 copies – the same day it was released.
